Every moment of your baby’s first year is special and deserves to be documented. But if you’ve just had a baby, you may be wondering what’s the best age for baby photos? I’m going to let you in on a little secret. The six month milestone is the BEST age and most parents will skip it in favor of scheduling first birthday photos instead. Here’s why I love this age the most:
Babies around six to seven months are typically very social. They haven’t yet developed stranger anxiety – a normal developmental stage when babies fuss and cry around people they don’t know. This behavior tends to peak around a year old, so photographing babies before that stage can make it easier to get those big, bright smiles! I’m often able to get great expressions just by smiling at your baby or grabbing their attention with silly noises. It’s so much fun seeing baby’s personality really shine through.
Once babies have learned to sit up on their own, usually by six to seven months, you can get a great deal of variety with setups. With babies this age I always do at least one setup with them sitting on their own. It’s a great way to document their newest physical milestone! Then we move on to props to mix things up a bit. Babies often enjoy sitting in baskets since they can explore different textures and materials. Is there anything cuter than a baby in a basket? I don’t think so!
Next, we do a little bit of tummy time. It depends on the baby how long this portion will last, but I always love getting photos of them showing off how strong they are! If your baby doesn’t love being on their tummy, you can flip them onto their back and get photos of them grabbing their feet and toes.
If you missed out on capturing the newborn stage and are wondering what’s next, you should absolutely consider booking a milestone session between six to seven months. This is the best age for baby photos if you are wanting to capture your baby’s personality without the risk of them being shy or scared. Plus, at this age they can’t run away from you!
